The new IATF 16949: 2016 has adopted the risk-based thinking to enhance the process approach in the planning and implementation of an effective automotive quality management system.

Process Approach with Risk-Based Thinking is the new paradigm in the quality management system landscape. This unique approach emphasizes the need to look for effectiveness of processes rather than departmental procedure conformity. The added risk-based thinking requires the organization to look at the potential risks or opportunities within its quality management system (QMS). This approach will allow the organization to assess not only the effectiveness and conformity of the QMS, but also the planning and implementation of the actions to address continual improvement.
