Background of ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is the world most popular Quality Management System Standard in term of certification. It is reviewed every six to eight years by the ISO Standards committee. The purpose of review is to ensure its relevance, suitability and effectiveness. At the recent review, a majority of the ISO committee members decided that ISO 9001:2015 requires updates. The new version was released on September 2026, replacing the 2015 version. The associated changes and impacts will make the ISO 9001 quality management system relevant for companies all around the world regardless of their size or industry.
Some of the new changes brought by ISO 9001:2026
- Climate Change Integration
- Formally incorporates the climate change amendments into Clause 4.1 and Clause 4.2. Organizations must explicitly determine whether climate change is a relevant external/internal factor affecting their Quality Management System (QMS) and consider interested party requirements regarding climate issues.
- Explicit Focus on Ethical Behavior and Quality Culture
- ISO 9001:2026 expands top management responsibilities (Clause 5.1) to actively promote, demonstrate, and foster a quality culture and ethical behavior.
- Separation of Risk and Opportunity Management
- ISO 9001:2026 reorganizes Clause 6.1 into distinct sub-clauses, separating risk determination/mitigation from proactive "opportunity-based thinking" and innovation planning. Corresponding evaluation metrics in Clause 9.1.3 and management reviews are also split accordingly.
- Expanded Planning of Changes
- Extends change management requirements by explicitly requiring organizations to plan, communicate, monitor, and evaluate the overall effectiveness and results of organizational/process changes.
